Are you a Windows user who’s been tempted by talk of GarageBand? There are great Windows compatible programs and apps which can do as much, if not more. Here are the best alternatives to Apple’s music production software that you can run on your PC.

Best Mac For Music

1. LMMS

Open-source production software with a bevy of built-in samples and instruments.

And unfortunately, for music production, there is no clear-cut winner that stands out from all the others. But as most people agreethe best PC laptops for music tend to be the best PC laptops in general. Which is Best: Mac or PC for a Music Computer Straight Talk from Tweak. G o to any computer gear-head forum, including studio-central, and simply ask this troubling question.

  1. As of early-2018, this is the best MacBook Pro for music production. I would stick with the 256GB SSD and expand with an external hard drive later as needed unless you know you’ll need the extra space. It also comes with a Radeon Pro 555 with 2GB video RAM. The 512GB SSD version comes with the Radeon Pro 560 with 4GB VRAM.
  2. Best Mac for musicians on a budget: Mac mini If funds are low, the Mac mini is a reasonably good choice for making music. It’s small, quiet, and has similar connectivity to the iMac, along with an additional audio-in port (although musicians typically prefer using USB audio interfaces).

The LMMS project is the work of a volunteer development team committed to making an open-source, cross-platform music production suite. It is a flexible and powerful tool that will get you up and running in no time at all. All at the bargain price of free.

LMMS sports a good variety of software instruments. Samples and effects are pre-loaded, which allows you to get up and running straight away. The interface could be clearer. Even then, it’s easy to use the instruments and make beats by experimenting.

Synthesizers are played via musical typing, mapping the computer keyboard to notes on the instrument. Drum sequencing is made easy with a visual mapping tool. 2. Mixcraft 8 Home

Loop-based software that’s a great first step for budding music producers.

One of GarageBand’s most popular features is its large and diverse library of loops. Users can quickly and easily build a song that sounds good, simply by layering loops of different instruments over one another in a way that sounds pleasing to them. It might be something of a shortcut, but it’s a great way for the uninitiated to dip their toe in the waters of digital music production.

Mixcraft offers a comparable broad selection of loops in an intuitive environment that makes it easy to get up to speed quickly. On top of this, live recording is also possible making this a real direct competitor to GarageBand.

The caveat is that the home edition is limited to just 16 tracks and a reduced set of instruments and samples. Mixcraft 8 Home is perfect for musicians just starting out, though the reduced feature set might be something you outgrow in time.

3. Music Maker Jam

An entertaining but limited music production app.

While there are certainly plenty of musicians who use GarageBand as a tool, many users enjoy the software as a fun way to play around with music. If you’re more interested in that sort of experience rather than full-on music production, Music Maker Jam will have you creating no time.

Unlike the other software covered here, Music Maker Jam is an app that you can download from the Windows App Store. The workflow begins by selecting loops by genre, before transferring them into an arrangement to create a song. BPM and volume levels can be tweaked on the fly, and FX applied as you see fit.

The ability to record vocal tracks over quickly built loops make it perfect for budding MCs and singers.

Star DJs and musicians contribute sound packs to the app, along with stems from popular tunes for users to remix. Winners of remix competitions and trending songs feature on the official Music Maker Jam YouTube channel.

The free version has the same unlimited tracks as the upgraded “Unlock” versions and some limitations. The drum machine and instruments are cut back basic versions, and you get fewer effects and presets overall.

Stagelight brings a unique way of working to the table, and the free version will be more than enough for many users.

6. Reaper

Complex production software that works particularly well with live instrumentation.

There are plenty of apps and programs out there that attempt to make music creation approachable for anyone. But the highest levels of production require complex software. Reaper is a package that gives the expert user a lot of options. Though, it won’t hold your hand through the process. A certain level of knowledge is assumed when you open up the program.

The advantage that Reaper has over the big names in the field of digital audio workstations is its price. Whereas competitors like Cubase, Ableton and Pro Tools typically cost hundreds of dollars, the basic license for Reaper is just $60 for personal use.

While Reaper has an impressive library of VST effects, they require a high level of skill to use. Reaper is also lacking in VST instruments that work “straight out of the box”. 1. Please date all articles. Hardware and software change so fast, it is irresponsible not to indicate date of initial publication and any subsequent updates.

  2. Good on you for giving an honest description of Reaper. I hear so many people who give it crap for being 'Not truly professional', but the only basis for that argument is its low price. Other people give it crap for being hard to use, but like you said, it's a professional tool, not a toy. Garageband is a toy, although quite a fun one and can be incredibly useful.

I'd also like to add that Reason Essentials should definitely be added to this list. It's a phenomenal piece of software (essentially a stripped down version of Reason, which is definitely a 'professional tool'), and it now comes with support for VST Plugins! And at only $69, too! Not to mention it's got that fun vibe that people love Garageband for.

  3. I think garageband is an awesome app that I have used so far.

  4. Does anyone know of a music software that combines creating rhythms with a simple notation as well. Like the old Percussion Studio but better quality sound?

    • have you heard of soundation???

  5. There's a great program with a bit of a cost called Reason. You can buy an 'Essentials' version costing around $100 or the proper version costing around $300. Its one of the best programs in my opinion to have and it's even used by many professional DJs.

  6. try out mixcraft! it's really something :)

    • I use Mixcraft and it is AWESOME! Real user friendly and produces great tunes!

  7. Anyone know a program that can tune an intrument after a recording? I'm thinking about making Viola Covers on youtube and I'm trying to find a good program to use.

    • As a fellow violist, I would suggest practice ;)

    • practice!

    • Practice....and Melodyne :)

    • Auto-Tune or Melodyne.

  8. Studio One Free is a great program, I used it for my music course last year instead of using a mac.

    • How good is it compared to garageband? is it as easy to use with as many options as garageband?

      • It's been a while since I've used it, but from what I can remember, if you're mostly planning to do MIDI stuff like create songs with a MIDI controller then its fine, but if you plan to do stuff with loops, the only loops it gives you are all synth loops which sound pretty crap compared to some of the garageband loops

  9. Some other options
    sunvox
    audacity
adobe audition / cool edit pro
lsdj via an emulator such as retorarch

    • Audacity is more of an editor, and less of a production tool. It's a cool concept of how it's all modular and you can install whatever plugins you want tho.

  10. I got a copy of Ableton for free with a little MIDI controller, and I have really come to appreciate it.
Looks like they might have a free trial as well.

    • HI Paddy,
can you please tell me what MIDI controller you bought. I am looking to buy one and if ableton comes free it will be worth it.

      • Rahul, Its any of the Novation products such as the launchpad or launchkey

  11. I'd recommend taking a look at Tracktion, it's cross platform and extremely powerful, while still easy to use. I backed it years ago when it was a beta and it's come a long way.

  12. What about Cakewalk?

  13. You missed Caustic

  14. Thank you very much for this much needed rundown of the pros and cons of the various Windows alternatives to Garageband.

Where It Excels

Best App Uninstaller Mac

AppCleaner is a very simple app, and considering what it does it ought to be. All you have to do is pick and app you don’t want anymore, drag it on to AppCleaner’s window, and it’ll find relevant files you also need to get rid of. With one more click, the app (and its files) are gone. Additionally, it’ll find apps on your hard drive and let you delete those as well by just checking them off a list. Same goes for Dashboard widgets and a few other items, such as browser and audio plugins. All of this is really easy to do and it works very well. It works as well as the competition but is the only uninstaller on the Mac that doesn’t cost anything. It also has a really neat feature called SmartDelete that watches your trash to see if you delete new apps. When you do, it’ll ask you if you also want to delete files belonging to that app.

Where It Falls Short

Best Software Uninstaller For Mac

Best Uninstaller For Mac

As nice as the SmartDelete feature is, it only works when AppCleaner is open and with apps you haven’t thrown away just yet. For example, if you have an app in the trash and then open AppCleaner, it won’t detect that there’s already one in there. Also, while AppCleaner provides you with the means to filter apps and other items by name, that’s it. You can’t filter by size or date or anything else. While filtering options are definitely not necessary features, as you’ll probably know what you want to delete most of the time, you might want to take a look at AppZapper instead.

The Competition

As far as uninstalling apps goes, they all do a good job. Our pick pretty much came down to price, because if they’re all serviceable options then the free one is sort of the obvious pick. Some of the competition has good, compelling features—which may be important to you—so read on for some other options if you want slightly more than AppCleaner can offer (and are willing to pay for it).

Some will consider AppZapper to be the better app, and it is if you’re interested in better filtering and a prettier interface. AppCleaner is still a really nice-looking program, but AppZapper just did a little more in that department. AppZapper costs $13, however, and that’s a big price jump when you’re not getting much more than you get with AppCleaner. Additionally, AppZapper doesn’t include a SmartDelete feature so you’re out of luck if you like that one.

AppDelete is very similar to AppCleaner. The interface is almost identical and so is the feature set. The three key differences are 1) you can search for orphaned app files from apps you previously deleted prior to using an uninstaller (which is pretty nice), 2) it can run as a hidden app so you can turn on trash monitoring (its version of SmartDelete) without feeling like you have yet another app open, and 3) you can delete apps via the Mac OS X Services menu. The other obvious difference is that AppDelete costs $8.

Lastly, there’s CleanApp which has the highest price tag by just a little bit ($15) but offers many more features. Aside from just being an uninstaller, it’ll also clean out tons of other old crap on your hard drive. It featured drag-and-drop app deletion like the others, but there are several more categories available to detect and remove files that have just gone unused for a long time, are duplicates, are unnecessary, and more. If a thorough cleaning is in order and a simple uninstaller won’t cut it, CleanApp is a good alternative.

My own early workflow incorporates Adobe Prelude (which utilizes Adobe Media Encoder) to prep all clips before ingesting into Premiere. You can also trim your clips in Prelude. In video projects unrelated to Drone videography, I've thrown video clips from multiple sources (cameras) onto the Premiere timeline and it intelligently conforms all clips. The Mercury Playback engine is beneficial, particularly if you have a video card that can handle the workload with its GPU. I was always a MAC guy when it came to video editing. But 18 months ago, with 4k on the horizon, I decided to do a home build PC. I built a i7 6-core machine with 32 gb RAM, EVGA GEFORCE GTX 780 video card, X79 Dark motherboard, A solid state boot drive, and four 1 TB storage drives . . . all for under $3,000. A similar MAC Pro would be close to $10,000. I am no longer a Fan Boy of either system. I just use what works best and costs less. Our Top Picks

Best Overall: Adobe InDesign CC

If you need to create and publish physical or digital documents, Adobe InDesign CC is the first app you should look at. Whether you’re looking to publish a book, magazine, poster, or a simple PDF report, InDesign can take on the task.

Inside the InDesign app, you will find a toolbar on the left side with tools to let you build out and modify documents and pages, including those for selection, drawing, typing, shapes, transformation, and navigation.

During the past few years, new features have been added to InDesign CC including better document previewing, document presets for smartphones and tablets, document analytics so you can see how many people have read them, support for digital endnotes and annotations, HTML code exporting, and much more.

Like other Adobe products, InDesign CC is an expensive subscription-based application, which can be paid monthly or pre-paid per year. Other design apps like Quark Xpress and Affinity Designer are available at lower prices or without subscriptions.

Runner-Up, Best Overall: Quark Xpress

In the publishing software world, Quark has a long history of being a top Adobe InDesign competitor — Quark’s first publishing products, released in 1981, actually predate Adobe entirely. However, Adobe is at the top of the design food chain these days, and Quark has become more of a middle-tier competitor.

Xpress 2018 is the most recent version of Quark’s publishing software and the most full-featured app they've ever released. Xpress offers every modern publishing tool and can help you create physical and digital documents, as well as iOS and Android apps. The 2018 version of Xpress specifically adds in features including OpenType controls, new color fonts support, the ability to directly import InDesign documents, an updated PDF print engine, better HTML5 code exporting, and unlimited Android app creation.

Quark Xpress’ biggest selling point is the fact that you don’t have to subscribe like you do with Adobe InDesign, so once you buy a single license for $399, it’s yours forever. Xpress also claims to have a more intuitive user interface and less clutter than InDesign, so it’s worth trying both out before you commit to one.

Best for Vector Graphics: Adobe Illustrator CC

When it comes to creating and modifying vector graphics, no software is better known than Adobe Illustrator. Vector graphics are incredibly useful in publishing because they can be scaled to both small sizes (for mobile phones or small icons) or large sizes (for billboards or big prints).

Illustrator lets you import, modify, or create new graphics from scratch. A toolbar on the left side of the screen features all kinds of tools: selection, typography, reshaping, symbols, drawing, painting, graphing, slicing, moving, cutting, and zooming. These effectively let you create anything you can think of, including logos, icons, hand drawings, and more — as long as you know how to use it, of course.

In the past few years, Adobe has added a ton of new features to Illustrator CC. These include increasing the size of anchor points, letting you import multiple-page PDFs, syncing and browsing with Dropbox, adding the ability to create up to 1,000 artboards on a single canvas, supporting the new MacBook Pro touch bar, and more.

Like the rest of the Adobe suite, Illustrator CC is a somewhat expensive subscription-based application, which can be paid monthly or pre-paid per year.

Runner-Up, Best for Vector Graphics: Affinity Designer

In the universe of graphic design software, almost every app in this category wants to position itself as easier to use and cheaper than Adobe Illustrator. This is the case with Affinity Designer, a smart and fast vector graphics app that can help you with concept art, icons, illustrations, patterns, and web graphics.

While Affinity Designer may not have every feature found in Illustrator, it does have just about everything you need for the majority of graphical projects. Notable features include the ability to zoom in on a graphic to one million percent (no exaggeration), a rich color palette and boundless gradients, brush stabilization, crazy-good curve control, advanced grids, and capable text and font editing.

But the things that really sets Affinity Designer apart is the cost. It's just $50 and doesn't require a subscription, making it an attractive option for anyone on a budget. If you’ve never used Adobe products and you’re not tied to the Adobe suite in any way, Affinity Designer is a great alternative.

Best for Photo Editing: Adobe Photoshop CC

Photoshop is one of the most popular photography applications in the world and for good reason. Since its initial release in 1990, Photoshop has continued to evolve and has robust features for enhancing photos, illustrations, and artwork. On top of this, it also lets you design websites, mobile applications, and other digital assets that are highly important to businesses.

Photoshop CC is the newest version of the app, and it’s as fully-featured as ever. New features include a Select Subject tool that lets you select prominent objects in images (like people, animals, or food), better brush performance and organization, new font variations, group layer arranging, and the ability to paste plain text with no formatting.

At the time of this writing, Photoshop is the least expensive subscription in the Adobe suite. If your photo editing needs are light, you might also be able to use Adobe Photoshop Elements, which does not require a subscription. We’d also encourage you to explore non-Adobe photo editing options like Affinity Photo and Pixelmator, which are featured below.

Runner-Up, Best for Photo Editing: Affinity Photo

Adobe Photoshop has been the gold standard in photo editing for years. But since Adobe's recent switch to a subscription-based business model, even some longtime users are looking for a more affordable alternative. Affinity Photo is one of these newcomer competitors that's giving Photoshop a run for its money. This lesser-known software has just about every feature you can think of for photo and image editing, including professional-level adjusting, RAW editing, Photoshop file (.PSD) editing, panorama stitching, HDR merging, batch processing, digital painting, 360-degree image editing, and multi-layered compositions.

One of the coolest things about Affinity Photo is that it offers four “Personas” (Photo, Liquify, Develop, and Export), which you can change between depending on what you’re looking to do. So when you select a Persona, the tools on the screen change. For example, when you are in the Export persona, you have more control over how you export your images to other formats.

If you’ve only ever used Photoshop, but want to make a change, Affinity offers more than 200 free tutorial videos to help you get started. Like its sibling Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo costs just $50 and does not make you sign up for a subscription, which is refreshing and will please budget-conscious users. And for all the features you get with Affinity Photo, $50 is a serious bargain.

Best for Beginners: Belight Printworks

If a heavy-duty publishing software like InDesign or Quark Xpress seems intimidating, it may be time to look at Printworks from Belight, a friendly and very easy-to-use Mac app. Printworks’ primary purpose is for page layout and desktop publishing including brochures, business cards, calendars, labels, and greeting cards.

Most people use Printworks by starting a project with one of its more than 500 templates for any publishing project you need to accomplish. From there, you can add text, images, and more. Speaking of photos, Printworks is preloaded with 2,000 clip art images and 100 image masks which can help you add all sorts of photos and art to your project. If you need more photos or fonts, you can buy an astounding 40,000 images and 100 fonts from Printworks for just $10.

At just $30, Printworks is a good deal and much less of a commitment than diving into Adobe products. And for $40 total, you’ll end up with software and a huge number of copyright-free images for all of your publishing needs, an even better deal if you’re just beginning in design.

Free Music Programs For Mac

Best Budget: iStudio Publisher

If cost is your number one concern when choosing publishing software, iStudio Publisher may be what you're looking for. For under $20, iStudio gives you a well-built and versatile app for publishing all kinds of documents, including newsletters, brochures, flyers, booklets, invitations, menus, cards, and posters.

All the basic features you’d want in a publishing app are here, including text columns, text wrapping, quick document previewing, shape size and alignment, color fill, shadows, and paragraph styling. For power users, there are a few features including custom page sizes, master pages, two-page spread editing, and drawing shapes. And iStudio Publisher has more than 60 templates so you can easily start on a project and then fill in photos, text, and artwork.

While it may not be the most full-featured publishing option, iStudio Publisher is a supreme value for novices and users that don’t need the extra bells and whistles. Mac users have given Publisher a 4.2 out of 5 star average on the Mac App Store and have raved about this as a much lower-cost alternative to Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.

Runner-Up, Best Budget: Pixelmator

Both Adobe Photoshop and Affinity Photo are great options for photo editing, but if those two apps are outside your budget, then look to Pixelmator and Pixelmator Pro. This alternative software is here to save you cash and still bring you most of the features you need to edit and create imagery.

Pixelmator costs only $15 and offers all the basics for photo and image editing, including the ability to touch up photos, sketch, draw, paint, add text and shapes, and more. If you're used to using Photoshop, you might notice missing some features like the Patch tool and History Brush are missing. (If you’re not a power user, that likely won’t be an inconvenience.)

On the higher end, Pixelmator Pro costs $30 and has more features and more parity with Photoshop. On top of offering more advanced features like real-time effects, Pixelmator Pro is built to seamlessly run on Macs released after 2012 and takes advantage of Mac hardware acceleration. This makes Pro a much better choice if you’re looking for more features and have a powerful Mac to run it on.

Best Free: Apple Pages

Pages, the word processing component of the Apple iWork suite, combines both wordprocessing documents and page layout (including some graphics tools) in one program—with different templates and windows depending on the type of document. It can also handle Microsoft Word files. Pages ships with new Macs and is a free download from the Mac App Store for most Mac users. A Pages mobile app is also available for Mac mobile devices.

Pages for iCloud can be accessed online free by you and your team to work in collaboration on the same document. A free iCloud account is required for access.

Runner-Up, Best Free: PearlMountain Publisher Lite

Music Programs For Mac

If you’re based outside the U.S. and want an inexpensive publishing app for Mac, PearlMountain Publisher Lite may be right for you. This app is free and offers you more than 40 templates for document creation and covers most of your basic publishing needs, including fliers, business cards, menus, newsletters, calendars, posters, books, and more. This consumer-level software comes with helpful wizards and templates to jump-start the design process, and it includes photo editing, drawing and text tools that make it a good all-in-one package for simple desktop publishing and print creativity.

Note: We wouldn’t recommend this software to U.S.-based users because it does not have templates for U.S. paper sizes like 8.5 by 11 inches.

While Publisher Lite is free, you may want to test it out and then upgrade to PearlMountain’s Publisher Plus, which costs just $20. Publisher Plus offers more than 170 document templates, more than 200 clip art images, and more than 200 backgrounds. One especially nice feature is that you can export all of your work in Plus to PDF, JPG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, and PSD file types in case you want to use other design programs as well.

Best Free Alternative to InDesign: Scribus

Probably the premier free, open-source desktop publishing software application, Scribus has the features of the pro packages — but for free. Scribus offers CMYK support, font embedding and sub-setting, PDF creation, EPS import/export, basic drawing tools and other professional level features. It works in a fashion similar to Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress with text frames, floating palettes and pull-down menus, all without the hefty price tag.

Best Publishing Programs For Mac

Best Free Alternative to Illustrator: Inkscape

A popular free, open-source vector drawing program, Inkscape uses the scalable vector graphics (SVG) file format. Use Inkscape to create text and graphics compositions including business cards, book covers, flyers, and ads. Beyond its wide set of standard and advanced features, Inkscape's functionalities are always expanding with optional extensions so you can add on the tools you need without the bloat of those you never use.

Best Desktop Publishing Programs For Mac

Best Free Alternative to Photoshop: GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)

GIMP, which stands for 'GNU Image Manipulation Program,' is free, open-source software that provides advanced tools for working with high-quality images. This software can handle retouching, restoring and creative composites and is considered one of the best free alternatives to Adobe Photoshop. It is capable of handling layers, filter, and effects and includes the majority of the editing tools you'd expect from a paid software.

The 2.10.6 version is now available for free download. Please be aware that the learning curve for GIMP is somewhat steep, making it a better option for advanced users rather than beginning editors.

Best Software Suite: Microsoft Office for Mac

This industry-standard software packages comes in an Office 365 subscription for computers, tablets and phones. Programs share the same file formats with Windows users, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and other components.

Best Free Alternative to Microsoft Office: Apache OpenOffice

Some say Apache Open Office isbetter than Microsoft Office. Get fully integrated word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing and database tools in this open-source software. Among the many features, you'll find PDF and SWF (Flash) export, increased Microsoft Office format support and multiple languages. If your desktop publishing needs are basic but you also want a full suite of office tools, try OpenOffice.

Best Version Of Keepass For Mac And Pc

A password manager for Windows 10 that handles the KeePass database format Show More. KeePass runs without any additional installation and won't store any settings outside the application directory. Supported operating systems: Windows Vista / 7 / 8 / 10 (each 32-bit and 64-bit), Wine. KeePass is about as secure as it gets because you have complete control over your encryption keys and there’s not central storage of these that leaves you open to a hacking attack. I’d personally say as safe as anything of this nature, but point you in the direction of this detailed review for further info. I am helping an iPhone user with KeePass and would like to suggest an app. I am sharing my findings hoping it will help others in the same situation, if anyone has specific suggestions or comments they're welcome.

I found the following on keepass.info:

Keepass For Mac Os

  • MiniKeePass, GPLv3 free software licence, source code - $0 with ads, $ to remove ads, TouchID supported, several posts here indicate it's friendly, LOTS of open and ignored issues, though.

  • iKeePass (dead website in Germany)

  • Passwordix - Paid, Russian-only support website

  • SyncPass - GPLv3 free software licence, source code (no tracker), $0 with ads, 22$ to remove ads

  • MyKeePass, source code - website last updated in 201, links to an abandoned site

  • KyPass - $6.99, seems non-freely licensed, couldn't find licence, supports WebDAV for sync, supports TouchID

I also found out about Keepass Touch which is not on the site above. Its website is in German and I couldn't find any other information (licensing, source code, etc.)

It seems MiniKeepPass is the least problematic - what are you using?

If you sync with a desktop/cloud-stored version of your kdbx files, which one or which protocol do you use?
